A short story for a quick morning read while you drink your coffee … Every good and trusted go-to coffee mug deserves a good story – so here is mine. One day, my wife and I decided to go and spend a few days in the mountains with very good friends who live near Asheville.

Dangerous Sermons
See these pews right up here in the front? Years ago, they might have looked a bit different than these we have today. I didn’t reserve them for a special purpose today, but I thought about it! In the early Methodist revivals, there were no nice, cushioned altar rails to come and kneel for prayer.

What Do You Want Me to Do For You?
A Sermon preached at Edenton Street UMC on November 10, 2024 Isaiah 49:8-13; Matthew 20:29-34 Before I begin, let me say that I have prayed, deliberated, and lost sleep over this day and this service. There is a temptation for preachers in the face of what we might call those “elephant in the room” moments

Who is the G.O.A.T?
A Sermon for the 18th Sunday after Pentecost / Mark 9:30-37 Who is the G.O.A.T.? Do any of you know what I am talking about? What would you say if someone just came up to you randomly on the street and asked you “Who is the G.O.A.T.?” I mean, it is easy around here, right?

Honest Memory: A Thanksgiving Day Reflection
(This post is an updated version of a meditation I wrote over 20 years ago. I share it today in hopes that it will continue to spark reflection, conversation, repentance, and gratitude) Psalm 78:1-4 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. [2] I will open

Overwhelming
I will be reflecting on my recent travels for some time to come. Over the years I have often personally lived by the “work hard, play hard, pray hard” motto that has been attributed to a 19th-century Episcopal preparatory school warden. I have never taken the “hard” in that phrase to mean difficult, but something
Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
