Prophetic Voice: Derek Webb
>My teen and college years were shaped by prophetic Christian artists like Keith Green, Steve Camp, and cross-over groups like U2 among a few others. These artists stood out because they sang of uncompromsing, radical discipleship that challenges the status quo and goes beyond the sentimental “Me-ism” of most Christian music. I had almost given…

Why I am United Methodist – Part II
The Non-Denominational Denomination In the first installment in this series, I addressed “what is in a label,” ending with the unavoidable conclusion that, like it or not, we all have particular histories behind our labels, names, and communal stories that cannot be shed, despite the impulse to succumb to the generic individualism of our times.…

Why I am United Methodist – Part I
What’s in a label? There is a trend in the church planting circles these days. “Shed the labels.” In order to reach a market that prefers generic Christianity over “name brand” versions, most denominations have jumped on the label dropping band wagon with little thought or reflection. And why not? The sentiment is certainly understandable.…

Comic Relief: Gotta Laugh or you Might Cry
>The De-Deification of the American Faithscapehttp://youtube.com/v/75uR8Iz1AB4 Thanks to “John the Methodist” for sharing this piece by Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central. Did you ever think you would hear a comedian reciting the full Nicene Creed? He also has fun with unitarians and points out the absurdity of religions hating in the name of God.

Beyond the Bumber Sticker
>Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become…

Annual Conference Highs and Lows
>Our family has a tradition at the dinner table. Each time we gather to break bread, we go around the table sharing each person’s “high” and “low” for the day. As you might imagine, we have had to tell our children to periodically mix it up. In other words, “lunch” can’t be the daily high…
Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
