  • When did the word "black" become a curse word?

In a previous post, I mentioned that I thought Obama’s speech on “A More Perfect Union” was an attempt to elevate America’s discussion on race. I still believe that is the case, but let me emphasize that it was an attempt that may prove futile if people of conscience and those who work for reconciliation…

  • Sharing Resurrection Faith

    >Many who read this blog know something about Reconciliation UMC where I pastor. For those who don’t, you may read here about how we got started. In 1997, I was appointed with Rev. Larry Johnson to help found this new multiracial, multicultural congregation in Durham, NC. Since that time, Larry has moved on to become…

  • Good Friday Meditation: The Sixth and Last Words

    >The readings for many Tenebrae services come from Gospel of John. They are John’s testimony about the final hours of Jesus’ life. Yet on Good Friday, there is also a tradition of listening to all the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ death. We know this tradition as the service of the Seven Last Words. Seven words…

  • More Reactions to Obama’s speech

    >Here is what a few Duke Divinity faculty think – Richard Lischer and J. Kameron Carter. CNN’s coverage and follow-up yesterday was so chalked full of banal sound-bites that I wondered if they listened to Obama’s speech in the same way that the nation has been listening to Rev. Wright’s sermons. My dad, preacha‘ man…

  • Audacious Hope

    >To think that I would ever hear a speech like this from a mestizo, front runner candidate for president of the U.S. (in my lifetime) sounds something like a ridiculously audacious hope. Yet here it is – complete with a rather penetrating analysis of race, done in a way that white America just might be…

  • Holiness Prayer #2

    >It is often referred to as a traditional Catholic prayer to the Holy Spirit. My small accountability group, that meets each Saturday morning, always begins with this prayer before we begin reporting on our weekly discipleship. It echoes words from Psalm 104:30, is used regularly by the Emmaus community (no doubt originally adapted from Cursillo),…

  • Word of the Day: Probity

    >The word for the day, according to dictionary.com, is probity: “complete and confirmed integrity; uprightness.” I like the word, and find it even more fascinating that yesterday’s word was recherche which can mean: “uncommon; exotic; rare.” The two words fit together nicely given current events. The question is, do they point to an absence of…

  • Prayer for Holiness # 1

    >As we journey these last few weeks toward the Easter Triduum, I will be blogging prayers for holiness. John Wesley’s covenant prayer is well known, but difficult to pray. In a recent lecture, Bishop Ken Carder shared a personal testimony about a friend and colleague who visited him in the hospital after he had experienced…

  • BMCR highlights

    >This year’s gathering of Black Methodists for Church Renewal in Los Angeles has been inspiring and hopeful. Here are a few highlights (quotes paraphrased as best I can remember): We founded the Black Alliance for Just Immigration because we believe that the black voice must be heard on this issue. Go down to the U.S.…

Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
