Primeras Impresiones sobre nuestro viaje a Mexico
>”Encuentro” is Spanish for “encounter.” It also means “I find.” On my recent trip to Mexico I did both. I found all kinds of things, information, and insights … and I truly encountered Mexican culture, people, places, and ministries in a variety of contexts. There is too much to process in a single post, but…

Encuentro 2008
>Friends, Tomorrow, at around 4:30 am, I will be headed to Mexico with 10 others, including Pastor Edgardo Colon-Emeric (Theology Professor at Duke and Director of Hispanic House of Studies), Rev. Gray Southern (Durham District Superintendent), and Cookie Santiago (Current Director of Hispanic Ministries, the NC Annual Conference). The 10 day trip, May 22-31, is…

The sermon I wanted to preach!
> This past weekend, while the Spirit was descending upon those gathered in Jerusalem, the 24-bug from hell descended upon my body and rendered me worthless for worship. Thanks be to God for Pastor Edgardo and others in the RUMC congregation who helped everything in worship move smoothly. As an aside, Edgardo and I have…

Need more church?
>We had church today! Did I mention that I love my church and I love to get my praise on? I guess I just was not ready for this Lord’s Day to be over, so imagine my surprise when a friend and awesome musician, Kent Brooks, (the magic piano man playing on many of the…

Here is another question: in today’s environment, where are you most likely to hear Psalm 23 read? (pause for responses). Precisely. William Holladay has called Psalm…

Obama and His Pastor – by episcopal candidate Randy Cooper
>With Randy’s permission, I am posting the full text of a piece he recently wrote in his church’s newsletter “The Informer.” Part of the reason I thought it important to post was because it comes at the recent controversy differently then almost everything I have seen and read. Put simply, Pastor Cooper is trying to…

Putting more "sound-bites in context
>Many people may watch these longer videos (below) and still have major issues with Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s two sermons that have caused such a stir, but I still think context is critical for better understanding. I will never forget my freshman year in college when Tony Campolo preached at Olivet Nazarene College and said (paraphrased…

A different James Cone quote
Though some have requested I do so, I do not think trying to unpack the nuances of black theology or black liberation theology on a blog would be constructive at this time in history – not when people browse the internet for quotes that will verify the presuppositions that they have already made. As I…
Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
