  • Holy Communion Harry Potter Style

    >I was dismayed but not surprised when I was recently made aware of this website that seeks to make Holy Communion available on the web. Sadly, the site bills itself as “A United Methodist Celebration of Holy Communion on the Web.” I guess I expect this kind of thing from some quarters of Christianity, but…

  • From 52 to 48 with Love

    >I happen to be in one of those extended families that looks purple when you put us together in terms of the past election, so when I ran across this blogger’s project to bring such families together after the election I thought it was worth sharing. The idea, according to ZeFrank, was to call for…

  • Church Growing Pains / Family Challenges / Political Exhaustion

    >Some readers of this blog have inquired about my inactivity of late. Regarding church and pastoral ministry, it has just been an amazingly busy fall. God is doing good things, but sometimes the growing pains can be difficult and taxing. Regarding family, I have to say that having teenagers is as challenging as I had…

  • >Torah Top Ten Sermon Series – Sermon I

    >I must admit, I rarely do sermon series. For the past 14 years of pastoral ministry, I have found that preaching the lectionary is both a great personal discipline and a kind of “school” for learning how to dance to the rhythm of the church seasons. Having said that, I have been a pastor at…

  • Jumping on the Pushup Bandwagon

    >Ok, so I am out of shape and needing to do better. I love basketball, but am out with a bum ankle for at least two more weeks. I despise running; occasionally bike; and have gotten out of the habit of regular workouts (no current gym membership). I have, however, always liked doing push-ups, though…

  • Why I am United Methodist Part IV

Conjunction-junction … whats your Function? (continued) Head and Heart It is often said the farthest distance on any human body is the distance between one’s head and one’s heart. Wesleyan theology emphasizes a Christian spirituality that holds the two together. Ours is not an anti-intellectual faith that requires one to “check your mind at the…

  • Hail the Heaven Born Prince of Hope

    >It came as a bit of a surprise to me that a blog post as innocuous as “blogging from Obama Headquarters” could bring such a string of comments! Take this statement about me from my friend Mike: Kevin, who has been a friend for nearly 23 years would not find my questions nearly as problematic…

  • Whose Family Values?

    >I agree in principle with this UMC Church and Society article on Dr. James Dobson, the Nazarene psychologist (my former denomination) who “champions” family values, which usually means he champions republicanism uncritically with more of an American narrative informing his views than a Christian one. The problem with the article above is that it is…

  • Blogging from Local Obama headquarters

    >Mondays are usually my day off. For the past few months, I have had to say to myself “yeah, right.” But most of that is my own doing, and not the fault of anyone else. Today I administered my mid-term exam to my evangelism class at Duke’s COS and then headed to the Blue Coffee…

  • The Origins of Hip-Hop Fashion

    >I had an interesting encounter at Burger King the other day. There was chaos at the counter. I was late to a meeting and waiting on a burger and fries when I and a hoard of other hungry clients discovered that the store was out of meat. The situation was made more humorous by the…

Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
