Worthless Physicians
>In times of tragedy, death, or suffering, people have a tendency to talk too much. After all, who wants to just sit still in uncomfortable silence? If human speech pauses at such moments, we fear that our Christian faith is rendered mute and impotent at at time when it should be shining forth with great…

Witnessing the Wonder
>“Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living….Amidst the meditation of mountains, the humility of flowers…we feel ashamed of our clashes and complaints…It is so embarrassing to live!…Only one response can maintain us: gratefulness for witnessing the wonder …” – Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (Quest for God, p.5) Here are a few…

Can childhood allegiance be rekindled?
>I grew up loving the Dallas Cowboys. It seemed that everyone in Oklahoma shared this passion for the boys with the classic “hitch” (set and reset) before each ball snap. This year’s team could not best NE, but they are 8 and 1, which at least makes me sit up a little. A little internet…

“Make it plain” or “reach out without dumbing down?”
I share an automated blog reading level with Andrew at Gen-X Rising and Theolog among others. I am not sure if I should shoot higher or lower, or what that might mean. Allan R. Bevere and First Things are both on the “college (post grad)” level. Jonathan is an absolute genius, Bishop Willimon aims at…

Go Ye and Swindle Likewise?
>A sermon on the dishonest manager / preached at RUMC on 9/23/2007 Alright already. I get it. Take a lesson from the business world. When church leadership gets tired of biblical metaphors for ministry like sheep and shepherd, field and farmer, fish and fishermen, we quickly turn to what may appear to be more relevant…

Gas Prices in Zimbabwe: 2.3 million dollars per gallon
>It is a devastated economy (for the full story, click the picture to the left). Grocery stores lay barren with people hanging out on the corner praying for a delivery truck to appear. Educated professionals are fleeing the country for their livelihood, as are blue collar and other workers. South Africa is now being described…

Wisdom for Wesleyans (from the Oxford Institute – those unable to attend in person)
>It only comes around once every five years, so if you enjoy Wesleyan studies, reflection, and conferencing, I recommend that you browse through this year’s group papers. Here you will find some great reflections from veteran Wesley scholars, Phd. students in Wesleyan studies, and up and coming Wesleyan theologians. For the “who’s who” of current…
Welcome to my blog! I love theology, life, writing … and the three things often intersect on this blog. I am not sure where I first heard it, but I have never forgotten the quote: “Give me anything and I can tell you about God.” I like that. It doesn’t matter what it is – movies, pop culture, politics, the church, music, motorcycles, basketball, the beach, the mountains, war, hunger, love, forgiveness, or people and personalities – it is all raw material for reflection on the mystery and majesty of God.
